Letter to a potential client about my teaching:
“I start teaching young kids by using 3 music books (lesson, recital, and a classical text book) and a theory book. I do 5 minutes theory in middle of the lesson to change pace and make students relax their minds. Your child will need it as the lessons from day one require 100% concentration.
Starting from the second month, I begin to train students techniques. It will take approximately 20 minutes in lesson and 5 to 10 minutes each day to practice. The training procedure is such: First year: 1) Finger Exercise (Ex); 2) Weight Dropping Ex; 3) Double Notes Ex; and 4) Five Finger Pattern Scales and Chords Ex (in all 24 major and minor keys). The purposes of these trainings are to make sure that students build up proper hand positions; enhance finger strength; relax shoulders, arms, wrists and hands so that the weight can flow into the fingers; and get familiar with the keyboard. After the first year, I will give students High Finger Ex to make sure that they are capable of moving each finger independently and continue to build up their finger strength. Students will start to learn scales, broken chords and "Hanon-the Virtuoso Pianist" and Czerny. All of which is to ensure students to grow strong fingers, use proper movements to produce beautiful tones, and eventually to be capable of playing fast.
Learning theory is important by all means. However the most practical reason is to enhance students' sight reading abilities so that they learn new music with ease without spending much time.
I only use the American method books in the first year. Begin from the second year, I will use classical textbooks, which provide higher standard, and classical music exclusively. I occasionally use Jazz and pop pieces to give students some of exposure to American music."
